played with some layer style and did a metal button from tutorial

metal-button. In it:
the button height is created by bevel and emboss layer style.
white circle around the main metal circle is created with a new layer and apply a 1-2 pixel outer white grow, I adjusted the opacity to control the brightness.
the small green indicator is created by small white outer grow and an inner shadow, also color overlay of green and a black to white gradient overlay to simulate the depth.

player psd download, thanks for the tutorial here, it’s a great tutorial worth spend time with.

The main background is created with light gradient, it’s not the background, but the whole thing makes a perfect design.

The main screen is created with light dark outer grow, to have some depth

Also the big numeric text is created with outer grow of the same color, and multiply of custom defined pattern, with the layer opacity adjusted.

Here is a technique used to limit the selection to the boundary of a layer:
1. make the selection you want
2. ctrl+atl+shift and click the layer you want that selected limited to

Most of the gradient used in this design work are all light to dark gradient.
Tip to create an inset effect:
1. dark to light gradient
2. black inner shadow
3. white (or lighter) 1px distance, 0 sized drop shadow
